Do You Know What Your Travel Insurance Covers?

by Olivia Sanders

Travel insurance purchases have increased due to epidemics of diseases, environmental disasters, and terrorism scares. What you may not know is the catch to all of this. If you decided to cancel your trip due to fear of these potential problems you may find your policy has limited protection for that decision.

Such things as attacks by suicide bombers or or other terrorist acts and wish to cancel your travel plans they probably will not be covered under the travel policy. Should you plan to vacation near the shore and think about canceling your plans due to a typhoon that may or may not hit your vacation location the chances are it will not be reimbursed by the policy. Situations like these aren't included in a travel insurance policy.

What travel insurance will cover, is payment to you for non-reimbursable portions of your vacation. Items such as the airline ticket and/or hotel deposits. This only happens when you have to cancel your trip, or put it off, or it will pay for the cost of food and rooms if you become stuck somewhere.

If you need medical care while you are overseas, travel insurance often can assist you. Many medical policies that cover a person at home may not cover expenses in another country and the individual must pay for them unless they have travel insurance. Be aware that a number of insurance policies contain various exclusions.

Ironically, many of the types of disaster that cause people to buy insurance in the first place aren't even covered. Some travel insurance policies stay completely away from terrorism coverage. As a result, would-be policy holders must choose their insurance deals very carefully.

But, even the policies that cover terrorist attacks will usually only make payment if there was an attack within 30 days of your departure and your schedule included that city. If you are concerned about going to Paris, or even Manchester in England because of a bombing in London, your travel insurance coverage will not pay. Basically, there's no available coverage for being afraid.

And yet it is fear that is prompting more and more people to buy travel insurance. But on the whole, travel insurance policies can't address this issue in any substantial way. Travel insurance policies also can trip up buyers when it comes to issues such as terrorism, in the event that a customer didn't buy the policy 15 days prior to booking the trip.

On the positive side of the coin most travel insurance policies have paid for motels and food for the persons stranded away from home when a terroristic plot in the year 2006 grounded all aircraft in London England. However, since no attack actually took place, policyholders who wanted to cancel their coverage were not reimbursed.

As with all insurance coverage, prices vary depending on the trip expense and whatever you need covered. A comprehensive policy covers; cancellations, delays that strand you, lost luggage, flight accident, and emergency medical attention. You can pick and choose which specific types of insurance that you would like.

Some insurance companies now have a policy that can be canceled for any reason. If you don't go on your trip, these policies will cover 74 percent of the cost. This is 40 percent more than the coverage you would get from a standard insurance policy.

About 17 million travel insurance policies are sold in the U.S. annually. Since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the yearly sales of travel insurance have practically doubled. Traveling has become more hazardous over the last few years and there has been a rise in flu epidemics and occurrences such as Chernobyl, due to this, sales of travel insurance is projected to continue to increase.

Keep in mind that during major disruptions, airlines, hotels and cruise lines typically will waive their restrictions and fees for travelers that wish to re-book. Sometimes you don't need the insurance to catch a break.
